This is the Commander Battle Box. It combines the flashy plays and swingy board states of the Commander format with the accesibility and randomness of the Battle Box format. The result turns out to be a very fun multiplayer experience.

Project Basics

There are a few basic guidelines I keep myself to when building a Battle Box. These are by no means necessary for the box to function, but help keep my projects tidy:

  • I use different colored sleeves for my deck, the land sets, tokens and any other distinct parts of the box. This helps finding everything quickly.
  • I design each box to fit into one Fat Pack cardbox. This helps to keep each box portable enough to be able to easily play it outside my house.
  • I try to adhere to any theme I have as closely as possible. If I'm doing a nostalgia box, a Tenth Edition printing of Shivan Dragon would not be acceptable; I would include an older printing instead. If there are no thematic restrictions I try to stick to modern bordered cards because their wording is mostly consistent and avoids confusion for newer players.
  • I like tokens, so I always leave enough room in each box to include at least one of each token I need. If the tokens don't exist, I'll usually proxy them by making a color print. Look here if you're looking to make some good token proxies.

Special Rules

In addition to following the standard Battle Box rules, the following rules apply:

  • If you are unfamiliar with the rules of the Commander format, please visit www.mtgcommander.net to familiarize yourself with them. Except for deckbuilding and the rules below, this Battle Box project follows the standard Commander rules.
  • Before the start of the game, each player is dealt a random Commander from the Commander Pool. This will be their Commander for the game.
  • Your Commander's color identity does not limit what type of mana your lands can produce.
  • The cost of casting your Commander (casting cost + commander tax) can never be more than 11 mana. If the total is more than 11 mana, the amount of mana needed to cast your Commander becomes 11.
  • Before the start of the game, each player puts five basic lands from their land sets onto the battlefield (one of each). Each player starts the game with these five lands on the battlefield.

Card Choices

I included many Commander staples and have tried to recreate the "big spells" feel that Commander has. The Commander Pool includes a few Commanders that might draw some hate around a regular Commander table (such as Rafiq of the Many) but because they don't get the benefit of a well tuned deck these Commanders are actually fun to play with in Battle Box. Lastly, the land sets include 2 sets of basics and no tap lands, because the board states can get very complex and keeping the mana bases simple really helps keep the complexity of the game in check. You can find an article explaining my initial card choices in more detail here.
